Descriptions of the different classes of material that Schwartz Excavating has to offer:

Class #5 Gravel:
|
A mixture of rock, sand, and clay that is used most often for roads and driveways.
Not all Class #5 is the same- “Call for the Best”
|

Class #1 Gravel:
|
Used most commonly for roads and driveways. It packs better than Class #5 due to
the higher content of clay and the smaller rock. This makes it much better for hills.
|
|
Screened Black Dirt:
|
We have the best in the area with its mixture of sandy topsoil, peat, and manure.
This is great for gardens and lawns.
|
|
Washed Sand:
|
This is the material used for beaches, sand boxes, and is often required for in-floor heating.
|
|
Mason Sand:
|
This is the material that is used for masonry work.
|
|
Screened Sand:
|
Use this material for slap preparation, filling in holes, and backfilling basements.
|
|
Washed 1 ½” Rock:
|
Use this rock for landscaping and drainage areas. Also used in septic systems
trenches and rock beds where it is essential that you get the cleanest rock
possible. It is sized approximately a little bigger then a golf ball.

|
Unwashed 1 ½” Rock:
|
An excellent material for real soft or muddy areas in roadways.
|
|
Washed ¾” Rock:
|
This is often used for landscaping and drain tile installation.
It is approximately the size of a quarter.
|
|
Pea Rock:
|
Also used in landscaping and drainage situations.
It is the smallest rock we offer.
|
|
Rip Rap:
|
There are many purposes for these rocks. Common usage includes shoreline protection,
retaining walls, decoration, and landscaping. We have it sized from 3-6”, 6-12”,
12-18”, 18-30”, and 30” and over.

|
Screened Gravel:
|
This is used for a road base. It is a cheaper alternative to
Class #5 and is screened to 2 ½-3” minus material.
|
|
Fill Dirt/Pit Run:
|
The cheapest material- good for filling holes and low areas. It may contain some rock.
|
|
Sandy Loam:
|
Use this for filler underneath lawn areas. This is typically covered
with a layer of black dirt.
